Invite Spring Early - Grow in Your Basement

Monday, November 26th, 2007

By Jim Kennard Now’s the time to get ready to grow your own seedlings! It’s not really difficult, and can extend your growing season by many weeks. For example, by planting brassica’s (cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower) in February in your basement under grow-lights, you can put large, sturdy transplants into your garden by the end of March or early April, and be eating them when others are just seeing them come up! However, remembering that photosynthesis, using light, heat and moisture causes plant growth, you must follow a few key natural principles very carefully, or you will be disappointed. First, seeds must have moisture to germinate and grow. And the soil mix must be moist, but not soggy, or you’ll drown the new plant, since it must also have oxygen! Second, while heat is essential, temperatures must be maintained in a narrow range for ideal germination to occur. Most vegetable seeds germinate quickly between 75 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. After plants are up, many of them will grow in cooler temperatures, but most all will become dormant (stop growing) at temperatures below 50 degrees. Third, light is not necessary for seed germination, but as soon as your seedlings begin to emerge from the soil, maximum light is required immediately for proper development. Therefore, to grow in your house, make sure your plants have a strong (but not hot!) light source directly on the plants, for up to 16 hours per day. Pictures of two grow-light shelves can be seen in the Photos section of the free gardening group at MittleiderMethodGardening@yahoogroups.com. The metal one is 6-shelf Commercial Chrome Shelving, from Sams Club costing only $70, and will hold 20 flats of plants. Suspend shop lights with 2 cool and 2 warm 40-watt tubes 2 to 4″ above the plants. The fourth principle relates to feeding. A balanced nutrient mix of 13 minerals is essential to plants immediately after germination. Those nutrients are mineral salts and must be very dilute in the soil moisture, otherwise osmosis will cause the salt to draw the life-giving moisture out of the plants, and they will die. To ensure you never burn your plants, water seedlings daily using the “Constant Feed Solution” of one ounce (2 level tablespoons) of Weekly Feed dissolved in 3 gallons of water. For the free Weekly Feed formula, go to the Gardening Techniques section at www.foodforeveryone.org, and look on the Fertilizer page. Next, it is important to separate your small plants before their leaves begin to overlap with others’, or the tiny stems will become very weak and spindly as the plants all stretch - looking for more light. By the time the plants have their first or second true leaf, this step should be completed. Failure to wait even a few hours can result in spindly, weak plants, which never recover. Transplanting seedlings into 2″ 6-paks or pots will provide adequate space for them to grow an additional 2-3 weeks, depending on variety. If it’s still too early to put them out into the garden by the time plant leaves are again beginning to overlap, prune the leaves, transplant again into larger pots, or separate pots, so the plant leaves always have maximum light. Before transplanting into the garden, “harden-off” your plants outside, off the ground for 2 to 3 days, to acclimate them to direct sunlight, temperature, wind, etc. This is important so the plant doesnt have the shock of a new environment added to the shock to its root system caused by transplanting. If the weather turns cold at night, bring the plants back in the house. The temperature adjustment needs to be gradual. For many of your plants, the pruning process does double duty. In addition to assuring maximum light, it shocks the plant mildly, causing it to pause in its growth and produce a thicker, sturdier stem. This process makes the plant much better able to endure the vicissitudes of the outside environment, such as cutworms, ants, etc. that often quickly decimate plants with weak, spindly stems. For tall-growing plants, like tomatoes, by the time they are 12″ tall, provide small stakes tied to the plant stem to prevent them from falling over. And with tomatoes, begin immediately to remove all sucker stems as soon as they appear, to assure a single, strong stem and maximum production from your plant. Online Resume Formats

Monday, November 26th, 2007

By Michelle Roebuck There are several types of online resume formats that can be used when contacting potential employers. When you search for job openings online, some companies will have on their websites which online resume format is acceptable. If you dont know which format is acceptable to a certain company, call them and ask. The worst thing you can do is send an online resume in the wrong format and have it ignored. PLAIN TEXT RESUME This format is also referred to as ASCII. Many companies used to accept this type of resume a few years ago when searching for a job on the internet was still new. When this format is used, the resume is written in plain text with no formatting. The resume is sent in an email to the employer. Unfortunately, because the resume is unformatted, it looks pretty ugly and is hard to read. With the advancements in word processing and email functions, companies are turning towards more professional looking online resume formats. PDF RESUME This type of resume is delivered to the employer in PDF format (Portable Document Format). You write your resume in Microsoft Word or some other word processing program, format it, convert it to PDF and save it. The file can be sent by email as an attachment. The employer needs to have a PDF viewer or Adobe Acrobat in order to view it. Sometimes this can pose a problem because of computer viruses. People are wary about opening attachments to emails. If the employer wants you to submit your resume by this method, go ahead and do it. More than likely, they have software that can detect viruses in attachments. WEB PAGE Some people use a single web page to display their resume. You have your own personal website. You write your resume in HTML format, upload it into your own website and give the URL address to employers so they can visit your web page and read it. This takes care of the problem of email viruses. Make sure this is acceptable to the employer. FILL-IN-THE-BLANK RESUME This type of resume is used by online employment sites and employers websites. You just fill in the blanks and the information is sent electronically into a database. Theres not much room for creativity as with your standard mailed-in resumes. The way to get your resume noticed is to use keywords. Keywords are nouns that describe your skills and achievements. Product development, project coordinator, Excel, Powerpoint are all keywords. They describe what your skills are and what duties you performed on your previous or current job. This last online resume format is the one used most often by employers. The rule you should remember however, is if you dont know which format to send your resume, go to the employers website. If that doesnt work, call them and ask. Treating IBS with Hypnotherapy

Sunday, November 25th, 2007

By S Reynolds Like acupuncture, hypnotherapy is another popular natural remedy for ISB that many people are turning to. Hypnotherapy allows a person to tap into a special mental state (the subconscious level of their mind), allowing them to alter the way in which they consciously perceive their health problems, and encourages them to respond to these problems in new ways. How? While they are in this special mental state, the person is given verbal suggestions or provided imagery to assist them in finding relief from their symptoms. The stimulation that the person under hypnosis receives from words and images has a significant impact on the way they function mentally and physically. For instance, imagery used during hypnotherapy for an IBS patients would be images that encourage healing. Depending on what the image is, the patient may imagine their intestines expanding and relaxing to let fluids flow through. Hence, this imagery is meant to help the patient with their constipation problem. Why is hypnotherapy an effective IBS treatment? The reason is because hypnosis is a therapy that can help both the body and the mind. Think of hypnosis as a treatment that helps a person put mind over matter. In other words, its a way to use the mind to help heal physical ailments. Furthermore, many researchers believe IBS is a primary disorder of the brain/gut axis. The what? The brain/gut axis is the term given to the important relationship between the events that have an affect on the way the central nervous system (brain) functions, and how this resulting function affects the way the intestines function through the intestinal specialized enteric nervous system. Essentially, the mind and body are connected. The state of ones mind can have positive or negative affects on the way the body functions. For many IBS sufferers, one of the best benefits of hypnotherapy is its ability to reduce the hold stress has on them. Most people with IBS are plagued by negative emotions such as anxiety, tension, and depression, all symptoms of stress that are caused by having to live with an incurable condition. Stress can cause chemical imbalances within the brain that can undermine the immune system and cause an IBS flare up. Hypnosis can decrease the stress one feels about IBS and help a person realize and explore new thoughts and strategies about how to cope with the illness. Hypnotherapy turns the negative to positive. Over the course of 15 years, numerous studies have been conducted on the effects of hypnotherapy on people with IBS. The results have been very successful. In fact, hypnotherapy regularly generates long term positive results in more than 80% of those who are treated with it. As an additional bonus, hypnotherapy is safe for all ages, and works on 90% of the population. Keep in mind, that like most types of natural remedy for IBS, hypnotherapy usually requires more than one session to be successful and maintain its effectiveness. Furthermore, although you can learn self-hypnosis, its a good idea to first undergo clinical hypnosis with a qualified and licensed professional to achieve the best experience and to find out if hypnotherapy can really help you. How To Use The “Og” In All Of Us To Make More Money

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

By Jay McKee 5000 B.C. — somewhere near a cave in Montana Og the Deer Catcher and Flam the Wild walk up to a cave. They have never seen this cave before. Flam turns to Og and says “maybe there are some tasty rabbits inside, let’s go inside and take a look. Og disagrees. He says, “nobody from our tribe mentioned this cave before, I don’t think we should go in!”. Flam is not swayed. He barrels into the cave, mouth watering, ready for the tasty treat inside. Two hours later…Flam is slowly being digested inside a rather large saber-tooth tiger who relaxes comfortably in his cave with quite a full belly and enough Flam to last another week… Testimonials are powerful. Why? Because they give potential customers a reason to believe in you. There may not be a greater influence on human behavior than seeing someone else do something, or hearing about them doing it. Nobody wants to be the guinea pig. Most people, no matter how insignificant the risk, do not want to be the first to try something. Most people want the other guy to test the waters before jumping in. This has a basis in our DNA through evolution. We humans are hardwired this way because this is what has kept us from being eaten by our early predators. So since this built in need for prior example exists in all people, what steps can you take in your business, right now to take advantage of this fact? Get testimonies! If you already have, great, but I think there are still a few things you can do to make them more powerful. I’ll discuss that later. But first, I’ll show you an example that you can modify for use in your own business and you’ll be surprised at how easy you’ll be able to collect testimonies. Sue’s Facial Salon Sue owns a facial salon. She wants to take advantage of the power of testimonies. How does she go about doing this? Here is one way. Offer a Prize Drawing The easiest and most straightforward way for Sue is to offer all of her customers, after they are finished with their facials, a chance to win a reasonably expensive item related to her business. The item should be expensive enough to be seen as a nice gift. It can’t be too cheap, but she doesn’t need to go overboard. For example, a bottle of face cream would be too cheap, but a basket of facial products (perhaps a 50 to 100 dollar value) would suffice. So right before each customer leaves the store, Sue could mention.. “I’m running a giveaway of this $100 facial gift basket. If you want to enter, please complete this card and place it in the entry box”. Collect Testimonies On Cards The card should have a welcome note restating how the customer benefits by going to the facial store. Then it should ask for feedback — both good feedback and bad feedback. The card should also ask for the address and more importantly the telephone number. The telephone number is required so the customers can be reached if they win…and if you are thinking two steps ahead….so they can be contacted to come in even if they didn’t win. Since she already has established trust with her customers, this method should help her quickly get a card full of comments. What To Do With All Those Cards Sue should then sort the card into a few piles. For each positive comment, she should place each card in a stack that addresses each unique selling point of her business. So in this case, let’s say one of Sue’s unique selling position (or USP) is that she provides the most luxurious atmosphere, then all comments regarding that should go onto a stack. Let’s say she provides a free 15 minute shoulder massage as an added bonus at the end of a facial…another stack should be created for those comments. Now she has many testimonies, each of which talk to each of her unique selling points. So what does she do with these testimonials? Well, she needs permission to publicly use those testimonials so she goes ahead and puts all the entries in a hat and picks the winner. Sue then calls the winner to tell her she has won and to come pick up the prize. When the winner arrives and picks her prize up, Sue tells the customer how much she values her and asks if she can use the comments written on the card in a testimonial. If the customer agrees, Sue then can ask the customer to sign and date a simple form giving her permission. Now, for the rest of the testimonials Sue wants to use, she can call up each non-winner and let them know they didn’t win the prize, but since Sue is so grateful the customer gave feedback, she will then offer each of them a 20% discount on their next visit. When they come in for the discount…you guessed it..Sue can ask if she can use their testimony. Pretty easy huh? What To Notice You notice in each case Sue: 1) Gave an incentive to take action 2) Never “bribed” them for a testimony. She asked for positive and negativefeedback. 3) Got permission to use a testimony easily since her customer is already happy to get such a great discount. Lead Them A Bit Another small tip to add is this: If Sue was having trouble getting specific testimonies, she could (ethically) lead the customer to the category she needed more comment on. Using the same example about a luxurious atmosphere USP, her card could solicit the proper feedback. She can ask questions like : “What did you like about the atmosphere?” _____________________ “What did you not like about the atmosphere?” _________________ This technique will help her narrow testimonies down towards her USP even further. Can You Use This Too? Can you see how you can learn from this story and apply the use of testimonies to your business? There are multiple variations to this I will discuss in future articles. I urge you to examine your own business and see if you can think of different ways to get and use powerful testimonials that speak to your strong selling points. Tanning Bed Facts

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

By M.D. Stacener A tanning bed produces UV rays and thus just like the sun there can be some health issues. You can tan safely by following the tanning bed tips provided by many. Here are some tanning bed facts. Skin type No matter what type of tanning bed you are using, if you dont know your skin type you could land up in trouble. There are five basic skin types. The lightest being albino the darkest being naturally dark pigmented skin such as Asian or African. And then there is the rest of us somewhere in between. The type of skin you have will determine how long and how often you can tan. Some skin types burn much quicker, while others seldom burn at all. The salon attendant will help you determine your skin type. If you are tanning at home then refer to the manual that came with your tanning bed. Tanning Lotions Always use a tanning lotion that id designed for indoor tanning. Stay away from the oils. They are messy and they get all over the acrylic which then blocks the rays from reaching you. Use a tanning lotion appropriate for your skin. So if you burn easily the choose a lotion with a higher SPF. Never use inside lotions outside or outside lotions inside. Each is designed to protect you from specific rays associated with that type of tanning. Do Not Let Yourself Burn Avoid a sun burn at all costs. In the tanning world this is the golden rule. Some people will burn much easier than others and you need to take steps to avoid burning. If you are really fair and you never tan without first getting a burn, then dont tan. Its that simple. Burns are dangerous to your health and the cause of skin cancer. No tan is worth risking skin cancer. Tan smart! Choose Your Bed Carefully You should always start with a lower watt tanning bulb bed. The beginner beds arent as powerful as the mega beds and it will give you pigment time to develop. Once youve got your base tan you can move to a bed that has stronger tanning bulbs. If you stop tanning and you loose your tan then you have to start all over again from the beginning with a low watt bed. The strong tanning bulb beds are very powerful and you will damage your skin if your skin is not ready for them. Home Tanning Beds You might want to consider purchasing your own bed. Although the commercial beds are great you have to work your schedule around their schedule and it seems youre always rushed. With a bed at home you can relax and enjoy your tan and you can tan in the privacy of your own home. Its a great end to a busy day. Home tanning beds can be purchased for a reasonable price, especially if you calculate how much it cost to go to a commercial bed. Remember there is not just the cost of session but the gas to get there, the wear and tear on your car, and the cost of your time. Its something to consider. Of course there are advantages to commercial tanning beds to. They always have the latest and greatest beds. They absorb the cost of replacing bulbs that have become weak, and they do all the maintenance and repair. All you have to do is show up. However you decide to get your indoor tan, just be smart and tan in moderation. You can have that beautiful golden tan if you play your tanning bulbs right! Wedding Cakes - 3 Steps to Choosing your Wedding Cake

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

By Cori Locklin Both the centerpiece of your evening and the delicious dessert, your wedding cake is a significant element of your wedding reception. It should be eye-catching and fabulous. (tasty too!) I’ve narrowed the process of selecting your wedding cake into three easy steps. Follow these, and you will have the confection that suits your personal style and budget. Step 1: Determine your Wedding Cake Style As the focal point of your reception, your cake should represent the theme of your wedding and reflect your overall vision. Consider the style, shape, color and adornments. Browse and collect photographs of cakes that inspire you. Make a list of qualities you like and don’t like. View Elegala.com’s wedding cake gallery for inspiring ideas. Make it Last Don’t forget to consider the longevity of your cake when making your selection. It may look like a work of art, but it is still food, and certain types will hold up better in extreme climates. If you will be holding an summer outdoor reception, opt for fondant icing over buttercream. While buttercream is tasty, it doesn’t keep well in heat or humidity. Step 2: Factor Cost Cake cost is based per slice and is determined by how complex the overall design. The typical range is usually $2-$15 per slice. As a result, there are 2 easy ways to keep your cake within budget. The first way is to choose a more simple design with minimal adornments. Fresh fruit and flowers are the cheapest, while handmade gumpaste or sugarpaste decorations are more expensive. If you have your heart set on an intricate design you saw in a magazine, don’t worry that the associated cost will break your budget. You can always improvise a complex design. Most wedding cakes featured in magazines use fondant icing, which creates that sought-after smooth look. Fondant icing is more expensive than buttercream, so ask your cake designer to create a similar look using buttercream icing. Many brides can opt for a smaller, intricately designed cake to showcase at their wedding, while the site holds simple sheet cakes in the kitchen to serve to guests. When determining the cost of your cake, don’t forget about additional costs such as shipping your confection. Some venues also charge a cake cutting fee of about $1.50-$3 per slice, which can significantly add to the cost of your cake. Step 3: Choose your Baker Before commencing your search for a cake designer, first determine whether or not your reception site allows an outside baker. If your reception site is the exclusive baker, sometimes the case with country clubs and hotels, you can skip this step - your work is done. If the site does allow an outside baker, pick a few local cake bakers and book appointments to view their portfolios. When meeting with potential bakers, consider look, taste and price. The one you choose should be able to create the beautiful masterpiece you desire at a price you can afford, and it should taste scrumptious as well. Ask to taste some samples to determine the talents of your baker. The Basic Requirements Of An Autoclave-Sterilizer

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Peter_Lim] Peter Lim A very important section of any medical practise or hospital is what is called the Central Sterilization and Supplies Department or CSSD. In the typical CSSD of a hospital, surgical equipments and bandages and supplies are sterilized and cleansed and ready for re-use. The equipment for sterilization is called an autoclave or commonly called a sterilizer. A medical autoclave is a device that uses steam to sterilize equipment and other objects. By sterilizing, all bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores are inactivated. There are chemical and biological indicators that can be used to ensure an autoclave reached the correct temperature for the correct amount of time. Chemical indicators can be found on medical packaging and autoclave tape, and these change color once the correct conditions have been met. With the change in color, we have indication that the object inside the package, or under the tape, has been autoclaved sufficiently. Setting the right temperature is very important, because if the autoclave did not reach the right temperature, the spores of certain bacteriium will germinate. Any surgical instrument which is not properly cleansed and sterilized is extremely dangerous to the patient and this is downright disapproved. Stringent control and adherence to best practice is necessary in any CSSD. Today, more than ever, with the need for the best health and recovery rates, we need autoclaves and sterilizers that are reliable and simple to use. A basic manual autoclave that can satisfy all of our common sterilization needs and is perfect for multi-doctor practices, clinics or surgery centers, would feature most if not all of the following features: 1. Required to be a closed door active drying system. 2. 15″ x 30″ chamber accommodates longer instruments or a large number of small instruments. 3. One touch design for simplicity of operation. 4. Automatically fill, sterilize, exhaust and dries at the touch of a button. As technology improves and autoclaves are specialized equipment, purchasing the autoclave needs a lot of study and research into what you require, the capacity of the autoclave, digital or analog controls, ease of operation and training to be provided by the vendor. The Future is Online Degrees

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

By Ryan Fyfe With the wide range of opportunity available to obtain an online degree, it almost doesn’t make sense to go to a university or college. Of course online courses will never be able to match the full immersion that an actual insitution can offer, but for someone who is working, or tied down with other commitments, it can open doors that where closed before. Whether you need to upgrade your education for a promotion at work, or to even just get the job that you want, an online education might be right for you. It’s generally more affordable and most importantly flexible then a competing course at a university or college. Online universities are striving constantly to become more reputable, and to offer courses in competitive fields. Keeping that in mind, the entrance requirements are typically the same for both online & offline. A typical online degree can be completed in about 3 years, but of course that varies on how much commitment you give to the course, and also if you have any previous credits that are applicable. One of the most important things to do when considering out on the path of an online education is to do your research! Research both the history of the school, as well as the current reputation, and if the degree you will obtain will be recognized for what it is you need down the road. There has been instances in the past where some online institutions have basically just been selling degrees, which can lead to several problems such as: Loss of jobs, and involvement with authorities. Keep a level head on your shoulders, do your homework, and you will make out just fine! Feel free to reprint this article as long as you keep the article, this caption and author biography in tact with all hyperlinks. Why Exercise

Monday, November 19th, 2007

By Jeff Foster Exercising is a part of a fit and healthy way of living yet so many find it absolutely boring. Although those who live to exercise like to claim that others are purely too lethargic or too spoiled by the contemporary couch-bound way of life to exercise on a routine basis, this is not forever the case. Some folks have far too busy daily schedules to press in just another time and effort consuming activity. And it is not just that, but there are still way too many folks who find the never-ending repetition of the identical motions unbelievably boring. The truth is that exercising can only be thought of as a time of happiness by folks who love such things, while other people focus their total awareness on the consequences and forget the humdrum routine. If you are unable to enjoy or stop even remembering the dull part, then you will predictably think of exercising as a burden. But, this outlook is not very good for your strength. But consider this, you may think that you have are on top of the world, you are youthful and fit and you may believe that you can get away without exercising but as age, guess what, it is not going to work. But this nice system doesnt always pan out the way that you think it will. By the time you reach your forties you have to face the fact that your physical appearance is going to age and as you age things happen. Heres the problem with that butchered thinking and that is by the time you find yourself forty or older you may not be able to lay back and chill out and your health may not be in top shape precisely because of abandoned exercising. Straightfoward physical activities like 30 minutes of jogging or aerobics each single day can go a long way toward attaining old age with a well heart and a better figure than many others who are your very same age. It seems many people are terribly impressed worldly things, but wealth cannot procure your young and vigorous health back again, not to even talk about the fact that often times they are also useless when it comes to happiness. If your busy lifestyle has led you to develop health issues such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol, then cash is not going to fix these problems. However even just a small amount of physical activity each and every day could make the difference in your old age. It should also keep you from getting a spare tire around your waist. Lets face it, looking soft and flabby as you age really just isnt all that attractive, so make a decision to do something about it. So getting in shape can be painfully dull and time consuming and doesnt always help you reduce stress in any way, but it does help your body deal with the load of pressure and it does help your survival at all physical levels. It is a known fact that most of the members of the opposite sex will also find a hot and sexy figure and one that is not overweight more attractive than someone who is a couch potato as evidenced by the condition of their body. So stop over planning your day with so many things to do every single day and make room for planning and shopping for weight loss appropriate meals and giving yourself time to exercise and find that well toned and shapely body hiding underneath. To Embrace our Inner Child and Our ADHD child

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

By Caitlyn Carrington We sometime take for granted the littlest things in life. Like a smile from our children and their laughter. When things seem darkest and bleak, we concentrate on our shortcomings and not on the positive things in our life. Like those who love us and those we love. Their encouragement and strength in times of adversity. Their resilience in time of turmoil and despair. Their belief in us and their loyalty to the family. To look at life through the eyes of a child in wonder and awe. We should embrace our inner child once and again. This would help us through our more difficult times and make being a grown up more meaningful. Would we listen to our own advice? We must ask ourselves this, before giving it. A child is sensitive to all things around them and senses when things are going wrong. It is up to us, to set things right again when their balance is upset. Hug them and tell them you love them every once in awhile and great things could happen. Like your son could show talent as a prospective comic book artist or future Veternarian. To keep their outer child in balance, we must embrace our inner child and understand them. So the next time your ADHD son or daughter gets on your nerves, think about what they are going through. They have to take their medication to make it through their day or school. Be proud of their accomplishments and if they ramble on for hours about philosophical theories, listen as well as you can, and be thankful they are having a good day.
