The Dangers of Liposuction

Monday, March 31st, 2008

By Charlene Nuble One Reality TV show, The Swan, thrives on makeovers. Often viewed as tantamount to having a new life, a lot of people get giddy with the thought of undergoing a makeover. Imagine being surrounded by aesthetics professionals brainstorming on how to make a deity out of an ugly duckling. Simply incredible, isn’t it? High on the mirage of the promise of exquisiteness lingers on mind. It’s not until the prick of the needle for shots of anesthesia brings you back to your senses. Elusive beauty is the major objective of each makeover. With this goal in mind, technology gave birth to a way of achieving what’s thought of as currently beautiful in the form of plastic surgery. Liposuction is considered the most popular procedure in the United States for several years running. But liposuction is quite new to the US. Liposuction was invented in Italy by two gynecologists, Dr. Gorgio Fischer and his son Dr. Gorgio Fischer, Jr. in 1974. Through small incisions, they were able to cut away fat tissues within the body. A rotating scalpel and suctions aided the procedure. Though not as comparable to today’s techniques, Drs. Fischer still deserve the credit for liposuction. Also known as lipoplasty and lipectomy, liposuction removes isolated pockets of fat from the body of those who are of relatively normal weight. These fat pockets or cellulites could either result from overeating alone or as an inherited trait that can’t be removed by dieting or exercise. The liposuction market comes from actors frantic with weight loss failure or simply just anyone who can afford a cellulite-free life. Anyone interested with liposuction should be informed that liposuction, as a surgical procedure, is not risk free. Before going gaga over losing those pesky flabs, better consider the following risks and complications that range from mild to potentially life-threatening. Skin Sag. Removal of fat tissues in one area of the body at once may result in loose skin, depending on skin’s elasticity. Stretch marks hint poor skin elasticity. So you might want to look all over your body for stretch marks first before getting nicked. Uneven curves. Take-two’s of this procedure often come from liposuction patients complaining about lumps and bumps from their original surgery. Liposuction Scars. Scars from liposuction are permanent. It is recommended that to prevent scar tissue from darkening, they should be kept out of the sun. Swelling. Depending on the recovery rate and are operated on, edema or swelling may last for weeks or even months after liposuction. Fluid pockets may form. They will need to be drained with a needle. Infection. Most patients that underwent surgical procedures are prone to infections. Antibiotics are prescribed to take after liposuction to prevent infection. Burns. Ultrasonic assisted liposuction utilizes a probe that may become very hot and can cause burns. Organ Damage from Injury. A probe under the skin through a small incision gives the possibility of puncturing an internal organ. Fluid Imbalance. During liposuction, large amounts of fluids are injected while some fluid is removed from the fat tissue. If not recognized fluid imbalance may result in pulmonary edema, or heart or kidney dysfunction. Pulmonary Embolism. Small pieces of fat may crumb off during liposuction and go to the lungs as pulmonary emboli. This risk is greatest within the first 3 days. Lidocaine Overdose. Too much lidocaine injected may result to toxicity. Liposuction Deaths. For every 100,000 liposuction performed, the risk of death is around 3. These liposuction dangers could be lowered in rate if an expert surgeon will perform the operation. The health of the patient would also influence the severity of the risks. Avoiding multiple procedures, general anesthesia, extracting large amount of fat could also contribute to a safer liposuction. Mobile Phones - Connecting You to Your World

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Elizabeth_Wills]Elizabeth Wills Man is a social being; we like to interact with our friends, family and acquaintances. We like it when we are able to convey our ideas across to others. And since times immemorial, we have done just that, albeit in different ways. Our primitive fore fathers used sign language to communicate and then we developed speech. The traditional phones came much later; the landlines came into the picture to enable us to communicate across geographical distances. The design, development and use of mobile phones have been a logical extension of this process. With mobiles, we are able to connect with the people who matter, even when we are outdoors and far away from our traditional phones! The mobile phones have ushered in a new era in the ways in which we communicate. The latest models of mobile phones truly connect us to our world. As a matter of fact, the latest mobile phones can be put to a number of different uses. We can use these sophisticated gadgets for communicating effectively with friends and family. We can use them for downloading music and video clips from the Internet. We can also access information from the Web, using the advanced capabilities of some of the latest mobile phones. Mobile phones can be used in a multitude of different ways and it makes perfect sense to use them in our day-to-day lives. Consequently, buying a mobile phone has become one of the most common activities in todays world. Most of us buy contract mobile phones as well as cheap mobile phones. We prefer contract mobile phone deals that come with gifts such as free mobile phones, free mobile phone insurance, cash back offers, etc. We avail of offers from leading network service providers and choose a specific tariff option depending on our individual requirements. This way, we get to use some of the best models of mobile phones from Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, etc., without in any way adversely affecting our paychecks or our monthly budget. It can be said that the world of communication, entertainment and information is beckoning us. And with the latest mobile phones, we can respond to the same. We can take on the different challenges of the modern world and make a mark for ourselves. Mobile phones have made us surer of ourselves and our place in this ever changing world. A Shark Tale

Monday, March 24th, 2008

By Larry M. Lynch Sweat erupted all over the fishermans body. The strain of pulling against the as yet unseen force below rippled the muscles in his arms and torso. Blood ran in trickles down the opaque monofilament line cutting into his hands dripping into the open Pacific Ocean as if to some instinctive ritual rhythm. The Bull shark rose towards the surface slowly. There was no hurry. It spun the hand hewn dugout canoe in a lazy circle like the hand of clock running backwards. He could see it now. It looked nearly as long as the canoe. He got to his knees for better leverage. On the next pass a cold, unblinking left eye met his. Knowing it was hooked, it bolted for deeper water nearly capsizing the canoe. Warm bile-colored urine quietly ran down his leg in a soft stream to mix with the turquoise seawater that now half-filled the dugout. Minutes later it rose to just below the surface, still circling. Unafraid now, it stared at him pulling against the line. Salt water and tears stung his eyes. An eerie acrid smell assailed his nostrils. An icy grip clutched at his heart. He thought of his wife and children. Tomorrow would be Christmas. But today, one of them was going to die. This was a three week fishing vacation on the Pacific Coast of the Choco Region of Colombia. I’d moved up to do some salt water big game fishing in addition to pursuit of other species in freshwater rivers, like the Chori, Jurubida and Tribuga that empty their tropical rain forest fed waters into the Pacific. Fifty-pound plus catfish species and monster Red Snapper often fed just outside these river mouths. Other bragging-size predator fish like Sierra, Aguja, Tuna, Albacore, Wahoo and Dorado also frequently feed in these areas. Sharks frequent the area too, lots of sharks. A Bull Shark Fishing guide Pepe Lopez and I caught a two meter long Bull Shark on Saturday, the 24th of December 2005 that was harassing a local fisherman in a three and a half meter long dugout canoe just outside of Utria Ensenada National Park. The shark had already swallowed the fishermans bait: a whole, live 18-inch long Tuna and was circling the fisherman and his canoe. The shark still had the 120 pound test nylon line and double number four hook rig in its mouth and was spinning the canoe and fisherman in circles. The fisherman still had the other end of the line providing tension against the fish. The line could hold the fish but was no match for the razor-lined jaws. Soon the line would be bitten through or break from the strain and repeated abrasion of the sharks sandpaper-like skin. Now if youre thinking, Just cut the line and the shark will go away, then you dont know Bull Sharks. No chance. It had just eaten a free, easy meal and was looking for the next course. That shark wasnt going anywhere, at least not just yet. You Do the Math If the fisherman won, he could look forward to a hefty payday. The sharks fins alone would command a tidy sum at regional markets, while the sharks meat, called Toyo, is a highly-prized commodity on its own. The situation didnt look too good for the home team at the point we joined in though. Two meter long Bull shark, one of the three most dangerous and aggressive shark species in the world, three and a half meter long wooden dugout canoe with no motor, just single-paddle manpower. No stun gun. No machete. No knife. The shark had just swallowed a free, easy meal and was on the make for yet another. They were miles from shore on the sharks turf. You do the math. If the Bull shark broke, capsized or sunk the canoe and won well, the fisherman would never see home again. In this region of the world, it happens all the time said Doris Lopez a resident of Jurubida, a local fishing village. Fortunately, our boat was a seven meter long heavy wooden launch equipped with an outboard motor. We also happened to have a detachable head harpoon with 250 pound test braided line and a wooden float attached. As we approached the scene the fisherman frantically waved for help. The look of terror on his face spoke volumes. Salt spray stung our eyes and nostrils. Our lips tasted of brine. The wind-whipped, humid air reeked of death. A Friendly Chat Only an hour or so ago we had pulled alongside and chatted briefly with him. He was after Bravo and fished a single live-baited line with a double-hook rig weighted to a depth of about thirty feet. The live bait of choice was Tuna which run in schools of 40 or so and are from 14 to 20 inches long weighing six to ten pounds in these waters. Already he had two thirty-pound Bravo in his hand hewn dugout canoe and was going for the hat trick. A third Bravo had just thrown the Tuna bait and broached the surface, apparently spooked by something else, the fisherman related. He wasnt sure what. The shark was worked up to a depth where he and it could see each other. Thats when all hell broke loose. It then became a fight in earnest but the home team was losing ground. The Final Battle We circled the scene and decided to harpoon the beast to aid in the battle to first tire, then subdue it. Three of us took nearly an hour to vanquish and land the menace. The fishermans original nylon line finally broke under the strain. I manned the gaff. Finally, we had to knock it out using an oar with repeated heavy blows to the gills and brain areas above and behind the eyes. We killed it and hauled the creature onboard our launch. The fisherman cut out his double-hook rig and took the shark’s dorsal and front fins which were worth almost as much as all of the rest of the shark. He headed off in his battle scarred dugout to Bahia Solano. That was the last we saw him and never got his name. Pepe sold the shark carcass to a commercial fishing vessel, the ARES, whose captain took it south along Colombias Pacific coast to the port of Buenaventura for weighing and wholesale. Interestingly enough, my wife and I took this same boat ourselves back to Buenaventura on the return trip home the next day. On the same trip in fact, as the shark. Prof Larry M. Sand Moulding Systems For Hobby Metal Casting

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

By Colin Croucher One of the all time favourites because of its ease of use and predictable results. Green sand will also retain moisture for weeks on end in a plastic garbage bin. Green sand is the most efficient, low cost way for the hobby worker to start making moulds for metal casting. But the trouble with green sand is the need for a Muller to make your first batch. Green sand does require maintenance and looking after to get the best results, but it will last for many years for hobby use, and can be used over and over again. Co2 Gas System & Dry Sand. The Co2 system is also an easy system for the hobby worker to use, it is frequently used in trade schools or colleges for foundry practice instructions because of the basic equipment requirements, small batches of moulding sand can be readily made up. Generally it is quite easy to use, and repeatable results are not difficult to achieve. However there is one thing that can be detrimental to the Co2 performance and that is if any excess moisture is contained in the sand, moisture levels above 0.5% will impair the performance of the sand and give poor moulding results. One drawback with co2 is the rental cost of the gas bottles, and the expense of gas cylinder regulators required for correct gas line pressure. Sand consumed in the moulding process is usually discarded after each use, which could present a problem if you are constantly casting. The Self-Set moulding Process. The self-set system is also very easy to use, all you need is good clean foundry grade sand, a silicate resin to mix with the sand and a catalyst to create the reaction in the silicate, which normally takes around ten minutes on a warm day. The equipment required consists of: A mixer, a small hand held power drill fitted with a simple paint mixer will suffice. And an accurate digital kitchen scale to measure precisely the chemicals you’ll be using. The silicate is quite expensive to buy, and is supplied in 20 litre and 200 litre drum sizes, the hobby foundry worker may need to cultivate a friendship with the commercial foundry operater in your area. There are several different systems that can be used, they are too complex to explain here. Suppliers such as Foseco have free info product user guide sheets to explain exactly how to use their products. The chemicals are generally quite safe to use as long as you follow the manufactures safety instructions, as you always should. The EPS or Full Mould System. EPS = Expanded Poly-Styrene resembles investment casting in that a single-part flask is used, so that no parting lines-and hence no fins appear on the finished casting. It is essentially a ‘one-off’ process, since the consumable pattern is carved from expanded polystyrene. This is a polymer derived from benzene and ethylene, and in itsexpanded form it contains only 2 % actual solid polystyrene. Readers will be familiar with the substance, which is used in the manufacture of ceiling tiles, and also as a packaging material for fragile audio & electronic equipment. An expendable pattern, complete with runners and risers, is cutfrom expanded polystyrene, and is completely surrounded with dry clean sand in a simple box or can. The molten metal is then poured on to the pattern, which melts and burns very quickly, (vaporises) leaving a cavity, which is immediately occupied by the molten metal. No solid residue is formed, and the carbon dioxide and water vapour evolved in the combustion of the polystyrene do not dissolve in the molten metal, but escapes through the permeable mould sand as a gas. The EPS process does produce a very strong odour. Moulding can be achieved merely by pouring readily available clean dry Sea Sand around the pattern. As the polystyrene burns, it produces a tacky bond between the sand grains just long enough for a skin of metal to form. This moulding system is used extensively in the engineeringindustries; the process is used in the manufacture of large press-tool die-holders, and smaller components in the ‘one-offcategory. Casting tolerances come very close to that of theinvestment casting technique. This system does have a wide range of applications for the experienced hobby metal caster. Forgive and Love a Cheating Spouse

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

By Angie Lewis Have you tried to forgive your spouse of adultery only to have it all come back to haunt you later? This happens because we have not forgiven in its completeness. Anyone can say they have forgiven, but what is your heart telling you? Do you think it is the end of your marriage because your spouse had an affair? On the contrary its time to nurture, cultivate, and cherish the marriage even more. It is time to start plucking out the mischievous weeds to make room for the tender new shoots. The purpose for forgiving those who have hurt us is to clear out unwanted emotions, and free our minds from negative clutter. This needless stuff builds up if we dont do anything about it. First and foremost we need to be mentally and spiritually healthy so we can express feelings and needs appropriately to our spouse. Then and only then can we actually forgive in completeness? One of the most difficult aspects of forgiving is the ability to stop picturing the hurt in our mind. We may actually try and envision what it was like for our spouse while they were engaged in the sexual act with another person. We want to know if they enjoyed it or not. We want to know why they did it. We may even believe there is something wrong with us sexually. All of these things enter our mind even after we have forgiven, and they can literally tear us apart. My motto has always been that we absolutely need to take care of our self first before we can take care of another. If we are all messed up inside, full of bitterness and resentment towards our unfaithful spouse, we certainly cannot forgive them. The same applies with love. Dont we need to love ourselves first before we can love another? So this brings me to detachment. We become healthy in mind by detaching with love. Whats that? As Jesus would say, Turn the other cheek. We need to let it go! Letting emotional qualms trouble us will not help the forgiveness process. When we let the anger and bitterness go from within our inner being, we can start applying constructive ways to build back up the wounded marriage. Detaching only means we are not going to allow the weakness of our spouse to CONTROL our mental and spiritual well-being. If we are still angry and bitter over their unfaithfulness, we invariably make their sin a part of who we are by obsessing over it every chance we get. Detaching gives us the freedom to forgive! If we refuse to forgive our spouse we are missing the wonderful opportunity to experience the joys in forgiving and sharing that happiness with our spouse. The marriage will miss out on the growth process that takes place within its framework, and the couples own spiritual outlook on life. Marriage can remain stunted by not forgiving or it can grow out from the selfish aspect of each couple by forgiving completely. No doubt, it is difficult to forgive when our spouse has had sex with someone else. But that’s just it; we are flabbergasted that our spouse would err against the marriage in such a way. We feel duped, unloved, and deceived! We want restitution at all costs! For some of us that means divorce. This initial feeling, of course, is completely understandable. We have been hurt deeply by the unfaithfulness of our spouse and justify our own bad behavior by literally making ourselves the victim of our spouses err. But who really is the victim here? In reality, we make our self the victim of our spouses weakness by obsessing over it and not forgiving. We do that to our self. No one does that for us. Divorce over unfaithfulness is totally unnecessary. Couples can work through this infidelity issue properly and grow from it to boot. Did our spouse have an affair to do wrong purposely against the marriage? I dont think so. Most of the time when a spouse is unfaithful it has nothing to do with the other spouse. The reasons behind unfaithfulness stem from the need for constant self-gratification, low self esteem, and lack of spiritual wisdom and knowledge. Heres how it works. First the idea to be unfaithful is imagined in the mind. Secondly it is mediated on with vivid scenes and great clarity. Thirdly, adultery somehow becomes justified because of wrong thinking, and cultural influences. Finally the act of adultery is actually carried out in the physical sense. Sometimes the guilty party feels remorse about defiling the marriage bed, and wont do it again. No one finds out, case closed. But sometimes-promiscuous acts continue, and that is because the adulterer has not humbled himself to God for the guidance he so very much needs to help him to turn away from tempting and enticing situations. Unfaithfulness in marriage is only a symptom of a greater problem. But so often when marriages break apart couples blame infidelity as the culprit, but it is not the real problem. The real issue is most likely boredom, lack of respect and commitment for one another. But those are the main features God had designed especially for marriage! And since the culture of society has made it justifiable to sleep around from bed to bed, house to house, couples have decided to make themselves a part of that promiscuous world instead of Gods world. So in essence the real problem stems from lack of spiritual wisdom guiding couples in their faithless marriage! Unfortunately, so many marriages of today deal with the issues of adultery. Culturally speaking, isnt it a thing of normalcy for a spouse to be unfaithful in their marriage? No one gives a darn! But this kind of thinking is destroying lives. It is not normal to have sexual relations outside of marriage! It is very wrong and goes against all that God has created and planned for marriage! Adultery breaks the bonds of trust and respect for the person we married, and carries with it a heavy sword of sinful rebellion against what God has created. You see, if we have not yet acknowledged the realm of God’s world and are lacking in the knowledge of God’s goodness, we, through our own understanding, allow our wayward thinking patterns to take charge. But what do we know? We know our negative feelings! That’s what we know. Our feelings tell us to be bitter because our spouse had sex with someone else. So what do we do? We become bitter! Our feelings tell us to stay resentful, and so we resent our spouse. Our feelings tell us the grass is greener over there on the other side of the fence. So we go to the other side. How can we forgive properly when our negative feelings our controlling us! These unhealthy emotions make our attitude, and ultimately tell us how to view the world around us and how to live in the world. In contrast, a healthy spiritually minded person allows self to be directed by Gods insight where it looks beyond selfishness and into the loving person they were meant to be. We absolutely need to have the knowledge and wisdom of God within the framework of who we are, so we can understand how to respect and love our spouse properly. Why on earth would anyone want to continue carrying the mistakes of sinful weakness throughout the marriage? Matthew 7:24-27 Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on a rock. The rain came down, the streams rose and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against the house, and it fell with a great crash. Bottom line. The ability to forgive does not stand with us alone. We just do not have the complete understanding to actually forgive without ever bringing up the offense again to our spouse, and even to our self! What happens is we only forgive superficially, which keeps us feeling the burden of the hurt. But we dont want this because here is what happens. If we only forgive superficially the offense will continually evade our heart and mind, consequently, bitter feelings take over and control what we do and how we behave. Do you want to lash out in anger at your spouse? Then forgive superficially. Do you want to say hateful and mean things to the person you married? Forgive superficially. Do you want to respect and trust your spouse again? Then forgive completely. Here is how you forgive. First, understand this: The Holy Spirit is our greatest blessing and gift from God that we, as His children receive when we share ourselves with Him. When we give up the selfish ego to God, He will in return gives us the gifts of how to love properly, how to hope, how to have faith with conviction, and how to forgive completely. When we act on His instructions we are allowing the power of the Holy Spirit to take over in our marriage and life and we are submitting to His will for us. God is in control. Remember, we do not have the ability under our own understanding to forgive properly, to love completely, or to understand and utilize the blessed gifts of the Holy Spirit. We know that all these awesome gifts come from God. But that is all we know. Not until we put all of this into practice will it actually be real to us. We will not understand what it is that God wants for us, until we submit our sinful and selfish lives to Him. We want it all. But to have it, we must experience it first. May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth. A loving doe, a graceful deer-may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be captivated by her love. Why be captivated, my son, by an adulteress? Why embrace the bosom of another mans wife? Creating a Great Watercolor Workspace

Monday, March 17th, 2008

By Charlene Thomforde Watercolor Art Timesaving Tip 1 Finding time to paint can be a challenge. If you have to clear off your counter, drag out your paints and set up your palette every time you want to paint, most of your time will be used up before your brush even hits the paper. If you can set aside a space or a whole room where you won’t be easily distracted, you can sneak in a few minutes here and there. Ideally, you will be able to close a door, but a even a corner of a room is better than nothing. That way you can leave your supplies in place and you will always be ready to go. Here are some tips for setting up a studio you will love to work in: 1. Make your space the happiest place in the house. Hang plants and inspiring pictures, and place your favorite objects around to fill the room and make it inviting. 2. Be sure your lighting is good. A task light with a full spectrum bulb works well for low light days and evenings. The ideal natural light is steady north light which comes from the left of your table if you are right handed. 3. Keep a small table beside your work table or easel to hold your supplies. You don’t want to crowd your working surface. 4. Work standing as much as possible. Sitting down keeps you from using the full movement of your arms and body and cramps your style and spontaneity. I like to have my table at standing height with an adjustable chair, so I can sit to do areas of detail or if I need to rest. If you must sit to paint, its easy to stand back to look at what you are doing when you work at standing level. 5. Playing music or talk radio can be beneficial. Sometimes too much quiet can cause you to think too much which can block your free flow of creativity. Great music can also inspire you to greater art. The most important thing is to enjoy being in your working space. Because if you don’t, you won’t want to spend time there! New York Speeding Ticket FAQ

Friday, March 14th, 2008

By Warren Redlich Every case is different and there are no guarantees. Below are rough answers to some questions we hear frequently. Q: Will I have to go to Court for my speeding ticket? A: It depends. Without a lawyer you usually do have to appear in Court. In most courts, good lawyers can resolve your speeding ticket or other traffic charge without you having to go to Court. Criminal Procedure Law 340.50(2) allows for a lawyer to appear on your behalf, if the proper paperwork is taken care of. It is possible that the prosecution will object, but that is not common. There are a few courts in the area where you will have to attend, but that is rare. Q: Do I need a lawyer for a speeding ticket? A: No, but in many courts a lawyer will get you a better deal than you will get for yourself, with fewer points, a lower fine, less impact on your insurance, and less hassle. Q: Will my insurance rates go up if I get a speeding ticket? A: A speeding conviction or other moving violation will be reported on your New York State driving record. If you are insured in New York, points on your license can affect your insurance. It is possible that your insurance company wont find out, but the odds are that they will. The best way to keep your rates down is to get a good lawyer to negotiate to get you a reduction. Insurance Law 2335 discusses in detail what violations can be used by insurance companies to raise your rates. A good lawyer will consider those rules in resolving your ticket. For out-of-state drivers, there is no simple answer. It is our understanding that New York State reports moving violations to the “Drivers License Compact”, and that this can affect insurance rates for out-of-state drivers. It seems like this is applied inconsistently. In some cases the home state never finds out. We have seen cases where they do. It is also our understanding that New York reports moving violations of Quebec and Ontario drivers directly to those provinces. For New York drivers who get out-of-state tickets, these generally will not affect you. The exception is tickets in Quebec and Ontario. However, it is always possible that your insurance company will find out, and if they do, your rates might go up. Under Insurance Law 2335, it should not affect you in New York, but that doesn’t mean they won’t try. When good lawyers negotiate plea bargains, they minimize the impact on your insurance rates. For out-of-state drivers, a lawyer might seek a reduction to something that has points in New York but not in your state or province. Q: Can we beat a speeding ticket or traffic charge? A: Most speeding tickets and traffic charges are difficult to beat and it will cost a lot more to fight than to make a deal. The police usually do a good job and most defendants are guilty. Still, the police sometimes slip up. The most common way you can beat a ticket is if the officer doesnt show up. That is very rare. The main reason you would fight a ticket is if you already have several points and you cant get a reduction that will save it. Also, if your job requires a clean license, it may be cost effective. You should discuss this with an experienced traffic lawyer. Q: What do lawyers charge for a speeding ticket? A: In upstate New York fees seem to range from $200 to $500 for most ordinary tickets. If it is a case that will go to trial, the fees would be higher, perhaps $1000 or more. Fees for tickets in New York City and downstate counties tend to be higher. Q: What is the point system? A: When you get convicted of a moving violation the DMV records points on your New York license. All moving violations are at least two points. Most are three points or more. New York recently added a new surcharge of $100 per year for three years if you get six points, plus $25 per year for each additional point. The following table shows the point values assigned to moving traffic violations. The “points” are assessed against your driving record based on the date you committed the violation, not the date you were convicted in court. If you accumulate 11 or more points in 18 months, you will be called to a DMV hearing, after which your license may be suspended or revoked. You will be offered the option of waiving the hearing or accepting a definite period of suspension. Some license revocations and suspensions are mandatory and do not depend on points. These include three speeding violations within 18 months, and convictions involving alcohol or drugs.VIOLATIONS POINTS Speeding (mph over posted limit) 1 to 10 3 11 to 20 4 21 to 30 6 31 to 40 8 More than 40 11 Reckless Driving 5 Failure to stop for a School Bus 5 Following too closely (tailgating) 4 Inadequate Brakes 4 (while driving employers vehicle) 2 Failing to Yield Right-Of-Way 3 Violation Involving Traffic Signal, Stop Sign, or Yield Sign 3 Railroad Crossing Violation 3 Improper Passing or Lane Use 3 Leaving scene of an incident involving property damage or injury to an animal 3 Child safety restraint violation 3 Any other moving violation 2 Albany Lawyer Warren Redlich practices in Albany, New York.
